April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The mission of this month is to raise awareness about sexual violence around the world, and to educate communities on how to prevent it. The term “sexual assault” is a large umbrella and includes all of the following:
Rape
Molestation
Unwanted sexual contact of any other form
Sexual harassment
Incest
Child Sexual Abuse
Sexual violence, even with an intimate partner
Sexual exploitation
Human trafficking
Voyeurism
Nearly 1 in 6 women in the United States have experienced rape (or attempted rape) at one point in their lives.
1 in 67 men in the United States have experienced rape (or attempted rape) at one point in their lives.
The majority of sexual assaults happen at or near the victim’s home, often by someone they know, and/or trust.
If you, or anyone you know is experiencing any of these, or experiences them in the future, Call the National Sexual Assault Hotline 800.656.HOPE (4673) to be connected with a trained staff member from a sexual assault service provider in your area.
